Bittersweet Cottage was built in 1954 by a native Mainer. He and his wife raised four children in the house before it was sold to the present owners. Life in rural Maine (and Mount Desert Island IS rural...check it out after October 31 when all the visitors have left!) was difficult and from observations, the family lived a spartan life with few amenities. Since taking ownership of the property, we have upgraded the entire interior while trying to maintain the flavor of this half-century old cottage. Bittersweet Cottage has become a comfortable, cozy abode, great for a couple, two or three singles, or a small family or group (no more than 4 persons). Bittersweet Cottage is only 400 square feet in total! Within that small space, you'll find an equipped kitchen with wood stove, electric cook stove, refrigerator, double sink, dishes, pots and pans; a small livingroom with love seat (opens to single bed) and morris chair, plus a maple table and chairs; one bedroom with double bed; a second bedroom with bunk beds; and a bathroom with shower. All rooms are small!! But they are large enough to use as a base for your visit to Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor, and of course, Acadia National Park! |
